Hearing Self-Test
Signs of Hearing Loss
If you think you may
have a hearing loss, please respond to the following
questions:
- Do you hear, but have difficulty understanding what
people say?
- Do you have problems understanding speech in a noisy
place?
- Do others comment that the TV is too loud for them?
- Do people sound like they mumble?
- Do family members or friends ever comment on your
inability to hear?
- Have you had surgery on your ears or medical problems
with your ears?
- Do you have any noises (ringing, buzzing, whooshing) in
your ears or head?
- Have you been exposed to loud noise?
- Do you have problems with your balance or with
dizziness?
- Do you have diabetes, thyroid problems, heart problems
or problems with circulation?
|
If you answered yes to ANY of these, you may have a
significant hearing loss.

How to test your own hearing
- Put your shoes on.
- Sit on a chair that is on carpeting.
- Rub your feet on the floor.
If you don’t hear your feet making sound on the
carpeting…you have a significant hearing
loss. |
When a hearing loss is noted, it is important to have a
thorough diagnostic test. Hearing loss may be caused by earwax,
brain tumors, aging, disease, fevers, heredity, exposure to loud
noise, some medications, infections, and trauma to the head or ears.
Some hearing problems can be treated medically and some cannot.
Diagnostic testing allows for the most appropriate management of the
hearing problem.
