This May commemorates Better Hearing and Speech Month! Let’s take this opportunity to remember how important our hearing is, not to take for granted the hearing ability that some people have, and to commit to assisting our hearing in any way that will enhance our lives. Better Hearing and Speech Month is organized by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), and they choose a theme for each year’s commemoration. This year, the theme will be “Communication Across the Lifespan.” One of the most important reasons to protect and assist your hearing is to maintain the ability to communicate. Although those with hearing impairments or deafness from birth may develop the ability to use sign language to communicate, those who develop hearing loss later in life tend not to do so. With this attention to the value of communication, the ASHA challenges us to help our loved ones speak, listen, and converse easily and clearly.
